Centrifuges all over the World

Why are experiments on scale models with soil performed in a centrifuge?

The behaviour of soil is strongly stress dependent. Therefore small scale tests at normal gravity are not very useful. The stress dependent behaviour is most clearly visible in clay models. If small scale models are made of natural clay that the size and so the self weight stresses are decreased. However, the cohesion is still the same. This means that the shear stresses are much too low to cause failure.
